Salvador Alvarez Obituary

San Leandro lost a little bit of its heart on the afternoon of Tuesday May 21st when long-time resident Salvador V. Alvarez left this earthly realm. He was survived by his devoted and loving wife of 55 years, Lucy Alvarez, his four children and their families: Rosy Alvarez, Rick Weese and daughter Angelina; Diana Alvarez and daughters Alejandra, Graciela and Liliana; Salvador and Nanami Alvarez; and Octavio Alvarez. He will also be remembered by his siblings Jaime Alvarez, Juvenal Alvarez, Rosa Macagba, Lilia Flanders and Olivia Rocha. He was preceded in death by parents Mateo and Petra Alvarez as well as siblings Mario, Ricardo and Dora Alvarez.

Salvador was born in the small town of Corrales in the beautiful state of Durango, Mexico in 1948. He was the third of nine children and emigrated to the city of Oakland, CA when he was 10 years old. He was always a hard worker and went from riding horses and minding the family’s ranch as a young boy to navigating paper routes before and after school to help his family. He graduated from Oakland High School in 1966 and later that year met the love of his life, Maria de la Luz (Lucy), in the same small town that he had been born in.

After a long distance courtship, Salvador and Lucy married. They briefly lived in Oakland and Hayward before settling into a pink house on a corner in San Leandro. There, they raised four children. He supported his family by working at Chip Steak Foods, then Ranch Hand Foods and then Shasta Beverages. Once he retired, he and his wife were able to visit the world including London, France, Italy, Spain, China, Peru, Vietnam, and Japan.

He adored his wife faithfully and passionately, he loved his family even more than his beloved Raiders, and was devoted to his granddaughters in a way that made the world beautiful, wholesome and magical. He was a great man, a father figure to many of his nieces and nephews, and generous to a fault. He never wanted to be the center of attention, and when not traveling with family, he preferred to spend his time quietly at home. His hospice at home was brief, and we were thankful that his final breath was peaceful. He left a legacy in his family and in his work that he was proud of, and the lives that he touched will miss him most of all.
