Maria De Sousa Vieira Obituary

MARIA ANGELINA DE SOUSA VIEIRA was born on March 2, 1934 in the village of Pedro Miguel, Faial. She passed away peacefully at her home in San Leandro, where she was a longtime resident, on December 26, 2025, at the age of 91. Angelina was a devout catholic, always with a rosary within reach until her dying day. A devoted parishioner of St. Leander Church in San Leandro, Angelina’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. Angelina was loving, hardworking and resilient. She was quite the homemaker from a very young age, as was common of the girls of her generation. She was musical and artistic with her hands in straw embroidery, crocheting, sewing, etc. She loved children and nature. She had a funny bone! Angelina married Salvador Vieira on April 30, 1957. When he was away in the Armed Forces for a good number of years, she raised her children alone mostly, overcoming many difficulties, running a household, raising crops and farming animals. Her hands were never idle. Angelina, her husband and teenage children arrived in the US in December 1977. They lived in Galt for a short time and then, moved to San Leandro where they eventually bought their first home. She loved to garden; she grew many of her own vegetables and fruits, and many beautiful flowers. She had a special childhood bond with her grandmother, helping her with all things in the home, baking bread, preparing food, fishing, etc. She had an exciting story about having caught a very large octopus, which she loved to tell! Singing in the church choir and performing songs with her sisters in the village events was also a highlight in her young years. She possessed a lovely voice and continued to use that gift throughout her life, serving her local portuguese parish choir at St. Leander for decades. She played the mandolin; her favorite melody to play was A Treze de Maio. In the past few years, she started to show signs of forgetfulness but completely refused any help. Remaining independent was her wish always! It went on for years but the day would come that she was diagnosed with dementia. As her health declined, she often repeated “A coisa tá feia.” This line will stay with us forever. It was funny every time, and the way she said it! It meant “Things are not going well.” She is survived by her three children: Pedro Vieira, Connie Silveira and Zélia Freitas. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Jennifer Ambrecht, Michael Silveira, Mallory Vieira and Peter Freitas and four great-grandchildren, Linkoln and Juniper Silveira, Viera and Ronan Freitas and her two sisters Lucia Silva and Goretti Correia. Angelina was preceded in death by her husband Salvador Vieira, her father Manuel Teixeira de Sousa, her mother Rosa da Conceição and her sister Maria da Conceição Alves. She will be remembered for her life of faith, courage and perseverance. May she rest in God’s peace. “May the Angels lead you into Paradise; may the martyrs receive you at your coming and lead you to the holy city, Jerusalem. May the choirs of angels welcome you and lead you to the bosom of Abraham, where Lazarus is poor no longer, may you find eternal rest". Amava as crianças e a natureza.
