Margaret Mary Doherty

  Margaret Mary Doherty, of San Leandro, born on September 6, 1924, passed away peacefully at home on February 11, 2024. 

  The daughter of Nellie and Anthony Morrisroe of Ireland, she was the beloved wife of Joseph (Joe) Doherty for 62 years. Margaret met Joe at a USO dance in 1946.  They were married at St. Elizabeth’s Church on September 13, 1947. 

  Margaret was a graduate of St. Elizabeth's Grammar and High Schools in Oakland and California State University, Hayward.  She was an avid tennis player, a decades-long member of a book club, and loved playing piano since her grammar school days.  She and Joe enjoyed playing bridge, dancing, and hosting parties.  They loved playing card games, checkers and backgammon with each other, their children and grandchildren.    

  Her faith was an essential part of her being.  She and Joe were very involved in St. Elizabeth’s parish in Oakland and later, after moving to San Leandro in 1966, in the Church of the Assumption parish.  She attended daily Mass, taught religious education, served as a Eucharistic minister to the homebound, lectored at church, and was an active member of the Assumption Women’s Club for many years.  

  A lifelong learner, she taught her family compassion, kindness, and love.   Margaret was the loving mother of Mary Solda, Dan Doherty, Pat Doherty (Janet), Tom Doherty (Ann), Dave Doherty (Paula), Eileen Huber (Steve), Therese Whalen (Joe), and Kathleen Smith (Adrian) and a treasured grandmother of 22 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

  A devout Catholic, Margaret now joins Joe and daughter Therese, grandson Arthur, her parents, and siblings Fathers Paschal and Ronan Morrisroe O.F.M., Sister Eileen Morrisroe RGS, and Michael Morrisroe (Mary Ann) in the glories of heaven.

A rosary will be prayed on Thursday, March 21st at 6:00pm at Santos Robinson Mortuary in San Leandro.  A celebration of Margaret's life will be held at a memorial Mass on Friday, March 22nd at 12:30pm at Church of the Assumption followed by a reception at the Alta Mira Club in San Leandro.
