It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Larry Johnston-our beloved husband, father, and Papa. Larry passed away on September 27, 2024. Larry was born on April 12, 1945 in Oakland, CA to parents Robert and Irene Johnston.
He grew up in San Leandro and attended San Leandro High School where he met his high school sweetheart and future wife, Pearl. After attending Chabot College Larry entered the Oakland Police Academy. While serving in the highest traditions of public service he was awarded the Medal of Valor. After retirement he continued his public service with the East Bay Regional Park District as a Patrol Officer. Larry was the proud member of Le Société de Camaraderie where he served as President 1979-80. Larry and Pearl were married for 57 years. They raised their wonderful children Karen and Tricia in the family home in San Leandro.
As a devoted and very proud father he coached his girls in soccer, softball, and basketball. Larry loved all sports- especially golf. His proudest experience was hitting a hole in one at Rancho Solano Golf Course-15th hole. Larry and Pearl loved traveling all over the world with family and friends.
He will be forever loved and remembered in the hearts of his wife Pearl, daughters Karen Johnston, Tricia Gumataotao (Terry), grandchildren Lindsey Lavine, Nathan and Noah Gumataotao, brother Robert Johnston (Janet), brother-in-law Jess Hernandez & Margaret (deceased), Stepmother Ann Johnston (deceased), & Denny Denker (Randy Miller), and several nieces & nephews.
A celebration of life mass will be held at the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on October 16, 2024 at 11:00am.
In lieu of flowers the family requests any donations be made to the Martin C Kauffman 100 Club of Alameda County-an organization providing immediate financial support to spouses of police officers and fire fighters who lost their lives in the line of duty and scholarships for their children. 100clubalamedacounty.org.
