Evelyn Marie Becker
January 8, 1930 – December 9, 2023
Evelyn Marie Becker, 93, of San Leandro passed away on December 9, 2023. Evelyn was born January 8, 1930 to Mary and Manuel Freitas. Her parents traveled from Portugal to Hawaii and later settled in San Leandro where Evelyn was born, the youngest of five siblings. Evelyn graduated from San Leandro High School and briefly attended U.C. Berkeley. She married Donald Becker in 1951 and went on to have six children. Her husband Donald served on the San Leandro Police Department for 34 years and was Chief of Police from 1975 until retirement in 1986. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband in 2000, three brothers and one sister. She is survived by her six children: Kathleen (Bill) Kellar, Jenny Santos, Don Becker, John (Janis) Becker, Barbara Becker and Bill (Sunshine) Becker. She was adored and will be greatly missed by her ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Until her illness slowed her down earlier this year, Evelyn led a busy and active life, still driving around in her new bright blue Honda Civic. Evelyn’s faith was central to her life. She was a devoted member of St. Felicitas Catholic Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister several mornings a week, volunteered with many church organizations and in the community.
Evelyn loved new adventures traveled extensively throughout the U.S., Europe and China with Don. She visited Africa with her granddaughter and, at age 85, explored the Galapagos Islands with her family. Evelyn was always the life of the party; she loved to socialize and really loved to dance (nickname “Crazy Legs”). She kept her sense of humor to the end. She belonged to many groups over the years, most recently the Red Hat Society where she always looked forward to lunches and excursions. And anyone who spent any time with Evelyn enjoyed her fabulous baking skills! She was the cookie baker extraordinaire, always coming up with new and delicious treats for church, family and friends. The cookie jar on her kitchen table was never empty, to the delight of her children and grandchildren.
Most of all, Evelyn loved spending time with her large and boisterous family: birthdays, holidays, Clearlake or just casual drop-ins. She was the adored matriarch and her family loved her deeply. She will be greatly missed by her family and those fortunate enough to have known her, but her memory will live on through the lives she touched and the love she shared.
