Dorothy Ann Aboumrad, 101 Years
Dorothy Aboumrad died Sunday, November 3, 2024 at the age of 101 in San Leandro.
Dorothy served in the Oakland Mayor’s Office during the Houlihan, Reading and Wilson administrations. She was the Personal Secretary for Mayor Reading. She also was an Executive Secretary at the Port of Oakland
Dorothy Ann Aboumrad was born in Oakland on February 21, 1923. Her father, Mershed and mother Sarah, had emigrated from Karoun, Lebanon. Dorothy was the eighth of ten children. Dorothy attended local schools including Woodrow Wilson Junior High and Emery High School.
Dorothy briefly moved to San Jose while working for the Denver Meat Company. She returned to Oakland to begin a 36-year career in civil service, including 10 years at Oakland City Hall and 26 years at the Port of Oakland. Dorothy retired at age 70. Upon her retirement from the Port of Oakland, a resolution commending Dorothy referred to “…her magical interpersonal and communication skills, her creative writing skills, and her exemplary work ethic.”
Dorothy was awarded many commendations during her career, including a special commendation from the Oakland Board of Port Commissioners for her actions immediately following the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. The commendation reads in part: “…immediately after the earthquake, and during the next 36 hours, (Dorothy) worked unstintingly and with exceptional skill and professionalism to meet the challenges that were posed for our organization.”
In 1978, Dorothy moved from Oakland to San Leandro, where she resided next-door to her late sister, Rosaline.
Dorothy is survived by three generations of nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held Tuesday, November 12, from Noon to 8 PM at the Santos Robinson Mortuary, 160 Estudillo Ave, San Leandro. Funeral services and internment will take place at 12:00 PM, Wednesday, November 13, at the Mountain View Cemetery 5000 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland
